HLA Engineering and Land Surveying, Inc. We are seeking a Survey Party Chief to lead field survey teams in executing land surveys, construction staking, and mapping projects. The ideal candidate will have strong leadership skills, technical expertise, and a commitment to delivering accurate and high-quality survey data. This position requires a hands-on professional capable of managing field operations and ensuring compliance with industry standards.
Key Responsibilities:
Field Operations:
- Direct and supervise survey crew in conducting field surveys.
- Operate and maintain survey equipment, including total stations, GPS receivers, and data collectors.
- Establish and verify survey control points before conducting fieldwork.
- Collaborate with surveyors and engineering professionals to ensure project accuracy and efficiency.
- Perform boundary surveys, topographic surveys, and construction staking.
- Assist in the preparation of survey plans, drawings, and reports.
Team Leadership & Coordination:
- Assign daily tasks to crew members and ensure quality control in data collection.
- Train and mentor junior survey staff in field techniques and equipment usage.
- Communicate effectively with project managers, engineers, and clients to clarify survey requirements.
- Ensure the survey crew follows all safety guidelines and HLA Engineering and Land Surveying’s protocols.
Data Management & Reporting:
- Process and verify field data for use in CAD and GIS applications.
- Maintain organized field notes, sketches, and digital records.
- Assist in performing survey calculations and verifying accuracy of collected data.
Equipment & Safety Compliance:
- Maintain and calibrate survey instruments to ensure accuracy and reliability.
- Adhere to company safety policies and regulatory requirements.
- Identify and mitigate potential field hazards.
Qualifications & Requirements:
- High school diploma.
- Minimum 5+ years of field survey experience, with at least 2 years in a leadership role.
- Strong understanding of land surveying principles, and construction layout.
- Proficiency in using Leica surveying instruments and software, including total stations, GPS, Drones and CAD.
- Valid driver’s license with the ability to travel to various job sites.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and rough terrain.
- Must be able to do physical activities (walking, hiking, bending over, hammering etc.) for extended periods of time.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Professional Land Surveyor (PLS), Land Surveyor-in-Training (LSIT) or associates degree in surveying, geomatics, or related field.
- Background in surveying for infrastructure, land development, or municipal projects.
Work Environment:
- Primarily outdoor fieldwork with occasional office tasks.
Compensation & Benefits:
Compensation for this position ranges from $5,000 to $7,500 per month depending on experience and number of hours worked.
