The 07/25 Runway Rehabilitation and Taxiway Reconstruction Improvements was the largest single effort to rehabilitate and replace aging infrastructure at the Sunnyside Municipal Airport (Airport). The Airport is located in Sunnyside and is solely owned by the City of Sunnyside. Project planning started in 2013 with the development of the 5-year Capital Improvement Program. Funding to complete design was secured in 2015, and construction funding in 2017. Construction of the project was completed in May 2018.
This important airport project rehabilitated the runway and reconstructed the parallel taxiway to increase runway-taxiway separation distance to meet Airplane Design Group II requirements. The Airport is solely a general aviation (GA) airport and funding through the Airport Improvement Program was difficult since improvements at GA airports are lower priority than commercial service airports. Typically, larger projects require additional resources above entitlement funds and must compete with other airports to secure discretionary funds.
HLA provided initial cost estimates and performed all work necessary by participating in the joint planning committee meetings and preparing the FAA Grant Application and WSDOT Grant Applications. HLA facilitated several presentations to the City Council, the Airport Advisory Board, and Airport tenants to understand the needs of the Airport.
During design, HLA completed the NEPA process to relocate the Taxiway, and also prepared an obstruction analysis of the existing buildings.
HLA provided construction administration and observation, including weekly safety and construction meetings, and coordination with the FAA. This project is a valued asset to the aviation community and the City of Sunnyside.
